Listen

The first two polyphonic Requiems in our history, two dazzling works with deep and deep tones magnified by the male voices of Diabolus in Musica.

These two Requiems by Johannes Ockeghem (+ 1497) and Pierre de La Rue (1518) develop deep sonorities thanks to an astonishing and original use of the low registers, and unusual musical audacities (ambitus, rhythmic games, striking contrasts, unusual expressionisms ...). The two great musicians demonstrate an astonishing mastery and virtuosity, always at the service of emotion.
At the dawn of the Renaissance, religious sensibility changed and the “ars moriendi” (art of dying well) took a fundamental place in devotion and its most spectacular artistic manifestations. The masses for the deceased, until then traditionally sung in a sober way and restrained in plainsong, are now put in polyphony, like all the other masses.
