"A dive into the singular universe of the lais, songs of atypical trouvères adapted from music from the Anglo-Saxon Celtic world in the 13th century"

In the baggage of a few musicians who were part of the wave of “Breton” immigration (coming from present-day England) in the 12th century: harps and music that we now call Celtic. These sounds, these very strange melodies and different from anything heard on the continent struck the minds of the trouvères. They have adapted their courteous poems to these atypical tunes to give birth to a new genre: the “lai” so original and different from traditional songs.

The courtly love and magical legends of the “matter of Brittany” find here a mode of expression of astonishing singularity and beauty.

Lais of Tristan and Yseut, lais of Adam de Givency, Thomas Hérier, Gautier de Dargies, anonymous. Each piece is presented by extracts from the translations of the poems.
